Because racing was important to the development and marketing of many Australian cars, the Falcon would occasionally have limited edition versions due to homologation.
FORD FALCON XB GT FULL
Performance cars sported full instrumentation including oil, tachometer and voltage gauges.įalcon engines ranges from the sedate 3.3 liter 130 hp six to the monstrous 5.8 liter 300hp V8 in GT models. The dash design was particularly interesting with its wraparound gauge cluster. They had a mix of luxury and sporting accents like chrome and woodgrain panels. They featured a bucket vinyl seats and a center console. The interiors were typical of Fords in America except that they were right hand drive. This was in part achieved with ‘C” pillars that were reminiscent of certain Torino fastback coupes, yet were employed for a standard sedan greenhouse. The Falcon managed to look Mustang-like, yet keep its sportiness and design language in tact as a four door sedan. Although it was possible to find a LTD or Fairlane sedan in America with big engines, they were mostly devoid of stripes and other look at me muscle car cues. In America, it was rare to find a Ford performance sedan – such honors were almost always reserved for two door coupes. The overall resemblance to the Mustang was enough to make the Falcon XA far more interesting than any American Ford of the time, even the Mustang line itself because of the four door Falcon GT.įor one, the Australians had a knack for making their sedans look just as sporty as the coupes.
The Geelong factory also sent V8s back to America for NASCAR duty. The famous 351 Cleveland V8s were now being made in Geelong, Victoria. Although the Australian Ford team had more control over the look of the new Falcon, they still relied on Ford’s American wing for some parts like the floor pan from the Torino and some engines.
